A big wall you can actually climb

El Potrero Chico is considered one of the world's great destinations for multi-pitch sport climbing. Specialist media and guide services — Climbing Magazine, Mountain Project, 57hours, The Mountaineers — describe it as world class and a climbing mecca.

What makes it rare is the combination: walls on the scale of the famous mountain ranges, but with fully bolted routes that make them safe and approachable. That mix barely exists anywhere else on the planet.

There are over 800 documented routes. Two of them are legend.Time Wave Zero runs 23 pitches and about 700 metres — one of the longest sport climbs in North America. El Sendero Luminoso is the wall Alex Honnold climbed rope-free in 2014, with the world watching.

The rock

The canyon sits in the Sierra del Fraile, 3 km from the town of Hidalgo and about 60 km from Monterrey. Its grey limestone walls — some up to 800 metres — began forming over 200 million years ago. An underground salt dome pushed the rock layers until they stood almost vertical, and water then carved the narrow gorge that gives the place its name: "potrero", a small corral. The rock is hard, sharp to the touch and very solid.

The climbing

Nearly everything here is multi-pitch sport climbing on fully bolted routes: you need very little extra gear. Grades run from 5.7 to 5.14, but what sets El Potrero apart is how many long routes sit at moderate grades (5.8 to 5.10). That makes it one of the most accessible big-wall areas in the world for intermediate climbers.

There are over 140 multi-pitch routes. Most take 6 to 10 pitches — "a perfect day of climbing", as the local guides put it — and the classics run to 12, 15 or 23.

The season

Mild, dry winters turn the canyon into the refuge for climbers from North America and Europe between September and February. Outside those months it gets too hot for the big walls, which is why the whole season packs into those months.

A short history

The first ascents were by Mexican climbers in the 1970s: bold lines on El Toro, with little protection and almost no documentation. In the late 80s a group of climbers from Texas — Jeff Jackson, Alex Catlin, Ed Wright and Dane Bass among them — befriended local landowner Homero Gutiérrez Villarreal and spent two decades cleaning and bolting routes. In the 90s, Kurt "The General" Smith and Elaina Arenz put El Potrero on the international map.

The guidebooks of a decade ago listed 500 to 600 routes. The most recent one, from 2025, lists over 800. The canyon is still growing.
