- A route too long to climb in one go: it is split into rope-length sections. You climb one, build an anchor, and carry on. El Potrero has over 140 of them, most taking 6 to 10 pitches.

- The YDS scale measures difficulty. 5.7 to 5.9 is approachable; 5.10 to 5.11 is demanding; 5.12 and up takes years of practice. The a, b, c and d letters fine-tune each number.
- 800 m
- The rock of the canyon. It began forming over 200 million years ago, and an underground salt dome pushed the layers until they stood almost vertical. It is hard, sharp to the touch and very solid.

Through February the weather stays mild and dry. Climbers are already arriving from North America and Europe, and the canyon has changed pace. We fill up too. Show up without a booking and you end up looking for a bed in town, 3 km away.

Nearly everything here is multi-pitch sport climbing on fully bolted routes: you need very little extra gear. What sets El Potrero apart is how many long routes sit at moderate grades. That makes it one of the most accessible big-wall areas in the world for intermediate climbers.

I would say it is the most technically demanding and involved big walls that I have climbed.
Built for staying, not for one night
Most people who arrive in season stay for weeks. Here is what you get, said plainly so you know exactly what you are walking into.
A real communal kitchen
A 14-burner industrial stove, 4 sinks and refrigerators. It is where people meet: cooking next to someone who just came down off a route.
Sport Camping, adults only
A separate area from the family campground, for people who came to climb and want to sleep. There are also rooms and houses if you prefer a bed and your own bathroom.
The camping area has no electricity
We say it before you arrive. If you need to charge gear or work online, a room or a house suits you better.
Fire pit, pool and restaurant
The fire pit is lit for whoever wants to join and goes out at midnight. The pool is open 10 am to 8 pm and La Tradición restaurant from 7:30 am to 9:30 pm.
Rules that matter over a long stay
Quiet hours, and speakers are not allowed — acoustic guitars are. The gate closes at 9 pm and opens at 7 am.

Getting here
The canyon sits in the Sierra del Fraile, 3 km from the town of Hidalgo and one hour from Monterrey. From Monterrey airport it is roughly an hour.
We run airport transfers: $1,960 MXN one way or $3,530 round trip. For groups, a round trip for up to 15 people at $5,200. Book it in advance.

Questions we get a lot
Do I need to book ahead?
In season, yes. September through February it fills up, and the local guide services say so themselves. If you have dates, lock them in.
Do you rent climbing gear?
We do not rent gear. We do offer a guided climb with a certified guide and gear included: $3,480 MXN for two people, four hours, booked two days ahead.
Can I stay a month or longer?
Yes — that is exactly what the season rates are for. The longest tiers, 31 nights or more for camping and 30 or more for rooms and houses, carry the biggest discount. The exact percentages are in the rates section.
Is there power in the camping area?
No. The camping area has no electricity. If you need to charge gear or get online, a room or a house suits you better.
Is there wifi?
Yes, free wifi. Coverage is better in the common areas than in the campground.
Can I bring my dog?
In the camping area yes, dogs and cats, two maximum. For other categories it depends on the unit — message us on WhatsApp with your dates.
What time is check-in?
Check-in at 2:00 pm and check-out at 12:00 pm. You can arrive early or leave late with a half-price day pass — one or the other, not both.
