Since 2001La Posada en el Potrero Chico

First time in the canyon

Your first season

El Potrero is one of the few places in the world where you can climb a 300-metre wall without being an elite climber. If this is your first trip, here is what is worth knowing before you book.

This is for you if

  • You climb 5.9 or 5.10 on single-pitch sport and want to try a big wall.
  • It is your first time on multi-pitch, or you have only done a few.
  • You are coming for 3 to 10 days and want to make them count.
01

Start short, not on the longest one

The temptation is to go straight for the 23-pitch route. Almost nobody who does that enjoys it. A 4 or 5-pitch route on day one teaches you how the anchors and rappels work, and how the heat hits here — and leaves you with energy for the rest of the week.

02

Count the rappel as part of the day

Getting down takes almost as long as going up. A 12-pitch route is a full day: early start, lunch on the wall, back in the afternoon. If you book five days, plan for three of climbing and two of rest.

03

Hire a guide for day one if you are new to this

A certified guide runs $3,480 MXN for two people, four hours, gear included. Book it two days ahead. It costs less than losing two days figuring the place out on your own.

04

Bring a 70-metre rope and a helmet

Many routes link better with 70 metres. The helmet is not optional: there is rockfall in several sectors, especially with people climbing above you. We do not rent gear here.

Where you should sleep

For three to ten days, Sport Camping works well: adults only, for people who came to climb and want to sleep. If you prefer a bed and your own bathroom, there are rooms. Keep in mind the camping area has no electricity.

Lock in your dates

September through February it fills up, and the local guides say so themselves. If you have dates, lock them in; if you are unsure what to book, write to us and we will tell you what suits you.
